4/24/2019 April 24th, 2019Earlier this year we were tasked with a HWAC first, restoring the Hair Esteem of an exemplary high school senior who had endured severe complications from what at first seemed to be an innocuous car accident. Though we’ve worked with women of all ages Erynn is among the youngest. Her mother Yvonne brought Erynn to us and entrusted us in restoring her daughter’s Hair Esteem after her complete and most fortunate recovery. The vehicle she and her friends were in was struck by an oncoming truck as they pulled out of their neighborhood. When her mother arrived at the scene, she found the girls seated in the car and visibly shaken. Unfortunately, her relief to see the girls were visibly okay, though perhaps in shock, would be short lived.
Once at the hospital she was informed that Erynn had suffered a massive compressive fracture on her skull that resulted in bleeding in her brain, and she was rushed into surgery. As her parents waited tentatively, family, friends, neighbors, and congregation members gathered around them. Erynn’s surgery was successful, but her recovery would be long and agonizing. The next day swelling caused her agonizing pain and stole her voice. The only way she was only able to communicate her pain was through frantic gestures and thrashing at her bed. It was every parent’s worst nightmare, seeing their child in pain, and being unable to help them. For a week, doctors and nurses did everything they could to relieve the waves of pain that would come over Erynn, and for the entirety of the week while her parents took turns watching over her, their community kept watch over them. They brought comfort in warm meals to the hospital and to their children at home, drove their younger children to and from school, activities, and kept them busy and happy. During this time Erynn fought hard to recover, and her doctors struggled to keep her sodium levels high enough to bring her swelling down. She was unable to put together sentences and lost the ability to spell. She could only spell out a few letters using her finger, and respond with yes and no. Sunday rolled around, and more bad news came along with it. Erynn suffered a seizure that morning. This brought spirits down, but they would soon be lifted. Just after her seizure a family friend and neighbor, who happened to be an anesthesiologist, arrived. He had been thinking of her situation and had been inspired to come up with a solution. He suggested they have a feeding tube put in and have her IV line replaced with a PIC line, so they could increase the dose of sodium she was receiving, and thus bring the swelling down. Once approved, doing so brought positive results, and she continued to improve every day for the next week. She added a few more words and phrases to her vocabulary and could stand to go on short walks. Friday came along and her mother received permission to take her on a small walk to the hospital gift shop, where she spotted the piano, they had just moved in a few days prior. She looked over at her mom, who knew she wanted to have a try, since Erynn had been playing since she was five years old. Soon her mother's eyes were flooded with tears, as her ears were filled with the sweet melody of the piano. The next day they were able to take Erynn home. She insisted on attending church that Sunday. After services ended the family received a visit from a couple of congregation leaders whom they had hosted over the recent holidays, Elder Brown and Edler Anderson. Elder Brown loved playing the piano, singing, and would get the whole family involved. He asked if she would sing with him, and though hesitant she agreed. Together they sang a soft but sweet hymn. After her miraculous recovery Erynn is on track to graduate and is still a candidate for Valedictorian. She has received an Academic All-state Award in Swimming, and a scholarship for visual arts. We are so glad we were able to be a part of Erynn’s full recovery. Once she restored her health she was left wondering if she had any options for reclaiming the beautiful hair, she had been growing for the past seven years. To operate doctors had to shave the left side of her head, and though she had overcome the worst of it, it was now time to renew who she saw herself as. Our team at Hair With A Cause knows how devastating the loss of hair can be for both men and women regardless of the cause. Though it can be perceived as trivial or vain the feelings of dissatisfaction with one's looks when we are faced with hair loss or perceived hair loss, are real and can be devastating for our self-esteem and mental wellbeing. We are so glad to be a resource to those facing hair loss issues, to be able to offer solutions and provide long-term plans for hair restoration. Erynn suffered a seizure that morning.
